Vicky Donor rakes in an opening weekend collection of Rs. 13.40 crore worldwide!

Bollywood has come of age in dealing with subjects that were only a few days ago considered as untouchables. So, now we have films talking about farmer suicides, AIDS, neglect shown towards erstwhile medal holders and many more. However, more often than now, they dealt with these topics in a very preachy way, but Vicky Donor claims to spread the message of sperm donation without being pontifical. 

Dr. Baldev Chaddha (Anu Kapoor) runs a fertility clinic in Daryaganj, New Delhi which promises to provide viable sperms to facilitate fertilization. But the problem with Chaddha is that his promise has fallen flat on his face as his clinic has registered more failures than successes. Bogged by the letdown, Chaddha decides to go searching for a sperm donor who will be fit and extremely active in every sphere of his life. As luck would have it, in an everyday colony tiff, Chaddha finds his man – a dimple cheeked, quirky, lovable and healthy Vicky Arora who stays in Lajpat Nagar. While Chaddha is convinced Vicky could be his trump card in reinstating his flagging business, Vicky is scandalised to hear this and makes attempt to stay away from Chaddha; but his jobless existence and deteriorating financial condition at home forces Vicky to give in, although reluctantly.

Few days later, Vicky meets a beautiful Bengali girl Ashima Roy (Yami Gautam) who works in a bank. Everything was going fine until Ashima finds out about Vicky’s recent past. Will Ashima realise how Vicky is bringing happiness to the childless life of so many couples or will she too get flustered by it?

Vicky Donor is John Abraham’s first production venture and we must say he did a well job in taking up a theme that was not even fathomed by anyone. The promos assure us that the film won’t take a serious take on the topic but a quirky one which will in turn assure that the masses get the message loud and clear while having fun. Made on an approximate budget of Rs. 20 Crores, Vicky Donor has reality show contestant turned VJ turned actor Ayushman Khurrana in the lead who is already a hit with the girls. This will add to film’s USP apart from the fact that it has John Abraham backing it.

Seems John Abraham and Eros International have a bonafide hit on their hands because today Eros announced an opening weekend collection of Rs. 13.40 crore worldwide for Vicky Donor. The film has grossed over Rs. 11.40 crore in India (net collection: Rs. 7.93 crore) and Rs. 2 crores overseas. Director Shoojit Sircar’s light hear-ted take at the taboo attached to infertility and artificial insemination performed well at the box office with the film opening to strong reviews and audience reactions.

Produced by Eros International and JA Entertainment, Vicky Donor is actor John Abraham’s first foray as a producer. The film released across 600 plus screens worldwide on 20th April 2012 and has done especially well in metros.

Vicky Donor marks Eros International’s synergy with John Abraham’s JA Entertainment, Rising Sun Films and Rampage Motion Pictures. The film stars veteran actor Annu Kapoor along with debutants Ayushyamann Khurrana and Yami Gautam. Supporting cast includes Dolly Ahluwalia, Kamlesh Gill, Jayanta Das and Swaroopa Ghosh.
